Portadown Under 13s continued against Malone in the return match at Chambers Park were they had left off the previous week when the two sides faced each other in Belfast. Having put in a great second half performance in Belfast Mervyn Gill’s & Chris Taylor’s young side were bursting with confidence and this was evident right from the start when they put Malone under pressure from the kick off. Most of the match was spent in the Malone half as Portadown scored 24 unanswered points in the first half through great team work. The Portadown forwards dominated the scrums and lineouts providing quick ball for an enterprising backlineThe second half wasa a reflection of the first with a dispirited Malone side overwhelmed by the young Ports. Try scores for Portadown were: Jordan Dowds (3); Jason Lau (3); Niall Davison(2) & Robert Bleakney (1). Niall Davison converted 5 of these. Special mention goes to Sam Close; Robert Bleakney; Michael Gill; David Mc Clelland & Jordan Dowds who were outstanding on the day.

Portadown were involved in what literally turned out to b ea game of two halves last Saturday with their counterparts Malone easily winning the first half 36-0 whilst Portadown won the second half 19-5! Unfortunately it is the whole game that counts and despite Portadown’s best efforts Malone won the match 41-19
After a bright start that saw the Portadown pack dominate the opening ten minutes it was the much vaunted Malone backline, with two outstanding centres in midfield, who turned the match on its head. Malone dominated possession and territory running in an unanswered 36 points by half time.
At half time Portadown Coach Mervyn Gill decided it was time to makea few changes to try and stem the tide and it worked as Portadown scored 19 points toa further 5 from Malone. The difference was made by the introduction of Jordan Dowds, Michael Gill, Jason Lau & Niall Davison. Two of these three – Jason Lau & Niall Davison-scored tries whilst Sam close added a third try for the visitors. Davison converted two out of the three.
The Portadown coaches who are delighted with the progress & attitudes of this newly formed team invite new players born in 1997 along to training on Monday nights at 6.30.
This Saturday the boys face Malone at Chambers Park in an 11.00 kick off.
After last week’s outstanding victory against City of Derry Mark Uprichard’s & Mervyn Gill’s young charges started the game with plenty of confidence and energy. However it was soon apparent that they were no match for a well organised Ballynahinch team whose play was well orchestrated by a very talented number 10. Despite Ballynahinch dominating possession which led to inevitable scores-leaving a final scoreline of 40-10- the Portadown players deserve massive credit for their “never say die attitude.”
Throughout the game they continued to work hard both with and without the ball. What they lacked in technique and experience they more than made up for with commitment and energy. Mark & Mervyn can feel very proud of their squad and with more training and experience they have a team who can turn these results around.
The U 13s will have a training session on Saturday at 10.00 as their match with Coleraine has been cancelled
