As you may be aware we no longer have a full time groundsman.

Many years ago the club existed with a willing band of volunteers.   This is ably demonstrated today by the great job done on the playing surfaces by Aiden, Geoff, Sid plus others.

However, we need more helpers in order to bring both the rugby and social facilities up to scratch.  An hour or two each week, when it suits you, could make a tremendous difference to the Club.

Outdoors, we need volunteers to brush up, collect litter and generally maintain the appearance of the grounds.  The pitch-side advertising signs also require constant maintenance and cleaning.

Inside, we would appeal for those with special talents such as electricians, plumbers and joiners.

We already have begun cleaning the changing rooms in preparation for painting so if you are handy with a roller get in touch now!

As well as the initial blitz on the changing area we need to introduce a cleaning and maintenance programme each week or twice weekly to keep the area clean and tidy and a more comfortable experience to use.

I am confident I can get about 10 Alickadoos (not all on the same night!!)

So how about joining us each Mon and Wed at 7.30 (or at a time that suits you) until completion.

Let’s be proud of our facilities.  Remember it was volunteers who put them there for us.  It’s time, boys, to honour that legacy!

Please register your willingness to help with Ann in the office, the Social Centre staff, both at Tel: 38335269 or myself at robingill49@hotmail.co.uk

Thanks in anticipation.

Portadown’s third match in the Ulster League, took place on Saturday at home to Malone. On a beautiful sunny afternoon the home crowd hoped for a return to winning ways after a loss to Instonians last week. Malone kicked off with a light breeze in their backs and immediately took the game to Portadown. The home side came off second best in the first quarter of the match but slowly came into the game as the first half progressed and ended having more scoring opportunities. Craig Woods was off target with 2 penalties in the 16th and 33rd minutes.

Earlier, Portadown were very unlucky not to score when, after a quick throw just outside their own 22, Craig Woods made good ground, up the touchline. A deft chip saw Tommy Overy winning the race for the ball, only for the ball to come off the inside of his foot to give Malone a chance to clear.

Finally after showing better control, Portadown were rewarded when Banks went over for a try converted by Whitten. 36 minutes gone the home side looking comfortable leading 7-0. Unfortunately just prior to this Portadown lost their playmaker Craig Woods with a knee injury. He was replaced by Josh Matchett.

Whatever happened at half time, Portadown came out having pressed the self-distruct button. Their inability to hold onto possession and their poor tackling made an easy second half for the opposition and Malone were able to run in 4 tries. The first came in the 5th minute but Fry was unable to convert to leave the visitors trailing by 7 points to 5.

It wasn’t long before Portadown conceded another score, when poor tackling let Malone in for another unconverted try. Now losing 10-7 after 13 minutes, the home side did hold out until the 30th minute before handing the travelling side another try. This was converted by Fry to increase the lead 17-7. Malone finished off the scoring in the 34th minute to finish the match easy winners 22-7

A slow start but a reasonable finish to the first half. The second half display was at best poor, with the number of turnovers conceded only being bettered by the number of missed tackles. With players missing and the loss of Craig Woods in the first half and then Tommy Overy early in the second half not helping the cause, it was still important that tackles were made when necessary. This was a game that was easier to win than to lose, against a Malone side which didn’t have a great deal to offer.

Our defence in next week’s match against Queen’s will need to improve greatly or the score may be a great deal higher.
